Summary
The Technical Director serves as the central link between creative vision and execution for live events and productions. This role partners closely with producers and creative teams to translate concepts into actionable technical plans, coordinating across departments to deliver high-quality event experiences. The Technical Director leads technical planning, oversees on-site execution, and ensures projects are delivered safely, on time, and within budget. This position is in-person, at the Salt Lake City office.
A significant portion of this role is focused on Event Design & Planning, which represents approximately 70%–75% of the workload. More than 70% of the work involves Vectorworks, including creating and updating drawings, responding to scope changes, publishing layouts, supporting build orders, communicating with vendors, departments, clients, and venues, and making updates as needed from the start of a show through on-site execution. Proficiency in Vectorworks is required.
Duties and Responsibilities
Event Design & Planning — 70%–75%
- Conduct site visits and develop detailed floor plans using Vectorworks to optimize event layouts
- Participate in technical and production meetings to align on scope, goals, and requirements
- Determine technical needs for each project, including lighting, audio, staging, and interactive elements
- Provide guidance on technical specifications, equipment usage, and cost considerations
- Oversee implementation of technical designs to ensure successful execution
- Coordinate Event Technical Direction technical coordination
- Support 360 scenery and client coordination
- Document site visits and venue notes
- Attend production and client meetings to understand scope changes
- Update designs and publish layouts as scope changes occur
- Use drawings to support build orders, vendor and department communication, client communication, and venue communication
Onsite Crew Leadership — 10%
- Lead on-site operations including load-in, setup, and strike
- Supervise crews and coordinate with labor teams to ensure efficient staffing and execution
- Oversee implementation of technical designs to ensure successful execution
- Manage project timelines before and during events to ensure deadlines are met
Labor Planning — 5%
- Track labor hours and support profitability through effective labor planning
- Supervise crews and coordinate with labor teams to ensure efficient staffing and execution
- Collaborate with production leadership to understand and maintain project and production budgets
Logistics Planning — 5%
- Oversee logistics such as dock management and equipment flow from load-in to load-out
- Manage project timelines before and during events to ensure deadlines are met
- Assist in tracking expenses and managing cost allocations across project components
Fire & Safety Planning — 0%–5%
- Ensure adherence to safety protocols and maintain a safe working environment
- Support fire and safety planning as needed based on event scope, venue requirements, and production needs
Technical Systems
- Design, set up, operate, and maintain technical systems including lighting, sound, video, and interactive elements
Requirements
- 3–4 years of experience in technical direction, event production, or project management
- Required proficiency with Vectorworks
- Strong working knowledge of lighting, sound, and video systems
- Experience creating and interpreting technical drawings, plans, and construction documents
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
- Preferred experience with project management tools or project tracking software
- Bonus: familiarity with design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite
- Demonstrated experience working directly with clients and senior stakeholders
- Ability to travel and work on-site for events as needed
- Strong leadership, organization, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in fast-paced, dynamic environments
- Knowledge of event production methods, stagecraft, and safety procedures
